Yes, you can donate a car with expired tags in Providence

In the Providence Metro, you can still donate a car with expired or lapsed registration. Wheel of Hope just needs a valid title in your name — we handle the rest with free towing.

If your car’s registration has expired, you can still donate it in Providence. You do NOT have to renew the registration or pay back fees first. What matters for your donation is a valid Rhode Island title in your name, not current tags or inspection. Wheel of Hope arranges free towing anywhere in the Providence Metro, and you still receive a donation tax receipt for your federal return.

Here’s how it works in Rhode Island: as long as you have a clear title in your name, Wheel of Hope can accept most vehicles even if the registration is lapsed, the sticker is long overdue, or the car hasn’t moved from your driveway in Elmhurst, Washington Park, Federal Hill, Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, or beyond. Our driver comes with a tow truck, you sign the title to our charity partner, and once it’s picked up, the vehicle becomes our responsibility. You’ll notify the RI DMV that you’ve transferred the vehicle so you’re off the hook for future taxes, tickets, and insurance. No inspection, no trip to the DMV to renew tags, and no out-of-pocket towing cost.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Check that you have the Rhode Island title in your name

Go find your vehicle title, not the registration card. Make sure your name is listed as the owner and there are no unknown liens. Even if the plates are expired or off the car, a valid title is usually all that’s needed for Wheel of Hope to accept your donation in the Providence Metro.

2

2. Tell us it has expired registration when you submit

When you complete the online form or call, mention that the registration has lapsed or the car’s been off the road. This doesn’t disqualify the car; it just helps us prepare paperwork and towing correctly for Rhode Island so there are no surprises at pickup.

3

3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in Providence Metro

Choose a pickup time that works for you. Our towing partner comes to your home, garage, or lot in Providence, Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, Warwick, or nearby. The car does not need to run or be legal to drive — it’s winched or rolled onto a flatbed at no cost to you.

4

4. Sign the title over to Wheel of Hope at pickup

At pickup, you’ll sign the Rhode Island title to our charity partner following the instructions we provide. Once the title is signed and the tow truck leaves, responsibility for the vehicle shifts to us. You can remove your plates if still on the car, according to RI rules.

5

5. Notify the RI DMV of the transfer to protect yourself

After pickup, follow Rhode Island’s process to report the vehicle transfer to the DMV and your insurance company. This helps ensure you’re not billed for future taxes, tickets, or registration issues on a car you no longer own. We’ll give you the information you need to do this quickly.

6

6. Receive your tax receipt and know your car helped

Wheel of Hope sends you a tax receipt. You can generally deduct up to $500 without extra paperwork; for donations valued over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098-C. Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind, helping people who are blind or visually impaired nationwide.

Potential complications to watch for

Missing or damaged Rhode Island title

Tip: Expired registration is usually fine, but we do need a valid title. If it’s lost, heavily damaged, or in a previous owner’s name, you may need to obtain a duplicate or correct title from the RI DMV first. We can explain what information the DMV typically requires so you’re prepared.

Joint owners or liens listed on the title

Tip: If the title lists two owners, both may need to sign, depending on how the names are written. If a bank or finance company is still shown as lienholder, we may need a lien release. Let us know upfront so we can help you understand what documents will be needed before pickup.

Vehicle stored in a tight or restricted location

Tip: Cars stuck in small back lots, underground garages, or behind other vehicles in Providence’s denser neighborhoods can still usually be towed. However, we need to know about height limits, locked gates, or HOA rules in advance so the tow truck arrives with the right equipment and access.

Out-of-state title or long-abandoned vehicles

Tip: If the car has an out-of-state title or has been sitting unregistered for years, we may still accept it. The key is that the title is in your name and transferable. Share those details when you contact us so we can confirm eligibility and avoid last-minute delays on pickup day.

FAQ

Do I have to renew my expired registration before I donate?
No. In Rhode Island, you usually do not need to renew your registration or pay back fees to donate. Wheel of Hope focuses on whether you have a valid title in your name, not current tags. We tow the car, so it never needs to be driven or legally on the road again in your name.
Can you really tow a car that isn’t registered or inspected?
Yes. The car does not need valid registration or a current inspection sticker because we are not asking you to drive it. Our towing partner uses a flatbed or wrecker to move your vehicle from your driveway, street, or lot in the Providence Metro directly to our facility or auction partner.
What if my expired registration is from another state?
Out-of-state and expired registrations are usually fine as long as your title is valid and in your name. Tell us which state issued the title and registration. We’ll confirm that we can accept it and explain how the title should be signed so the transfer complies with that state’s rules.
Will I still get a tax deduction if my registration is expired?
Yes. Your federal tax deduction is based on your charitable donation, not on whether the tags are current. Wheel of Hope will send you a donation receipt. For most vehicles, you can deduct up to $500 easily; for donations over $500, you’ll typically file IRS Form 1098-C with your return.
What happens to liability once my expired-tag car is towed?
Once you sign the title over and the car is picked up, responsibility shifts away from you. You should notify the RI DMV and your insurer of the transfer. This helps ensure you’re not responsible for future taxes, parking tickets, or issues involving the vehicle after donation.
Can you pick up my unregistered car if it doesn’t start or move?
Yes. Running or not, we can generally tow it. Just tell us if it has flat tires, missing keys, or is stuck in a tight Providence driveway or garage. Our towing partner will bring the right equipment to safely load the vehicle. You don’t have to repair it or make it roadworthy first.
How fast can you pick up an expired-registration car in Providence?
Pickup times vary, but in most Providence-area neighborhoods we can schedule towing within a short window. When you contact Wheel of Hope, we’ll ask your location, vehicle details, and preferred days. We’ll then confirm the earliest available tow slot and keep you updated until pickup is complete.
