If you’re looking at a dented, rusty, or storm-damaged car in your Providence driveway and wondering, “Can I really donate this?” the answer is yes. Wheel of Hope works with Heritage for the Blind to accept vehicles in virtually any cosmetic condition throughout the Providence Metro — from Federal Hill and Elmhurst to Cranston, Pawtucket, and Warwick. Dents, peeling paint, rust spots, cracked glass, hail damage, even accident or flood damage generally do not prevent your car from being accepted.
Here’s how it works in Rhode Island: you don’t have to repair the car or make it look nicer. We arrange free towing from your home, garage, body shop, or storage lot — running or not. The vehicle is sold for its real market value in its current condition. Your tax deduction is based on the actual sale price after pickup, not on how the car looks. If it sells for less than $500, you still receive a guaranteed $500 tax-deduction receipt; if it sells for more, you may deduct the higher amount in line with IRS rules. Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446), uses the proceeds to support programs for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle in Providence Metro
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, where the car is located, and what kind of body damage it has (dents, rust, cracked windshield, accident or storm damage). This information helps us plan the right tow and set expectations about sale value and your potential tax deduction, without needing photos or an in-person inspection first.
2. Get a clear explanation of value and tax deduction
We’ll explain how your deduction works for damaged vehicles in Rhode Island. Your car will be sold as-is, and your deduction is based on the sale price. If it sells under $500, you still receive a $500 tax-deduction receipt. If it sells for more, we’ll issue documentation for the higher amount, following IRS rules and providing Form 1098-C when required.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere around Providence
Choose a pickup time that works for you. We arrange free towing from Providence, East Providence, North Providence, Cranston, Pawtucket, Warwick, or nearby suburbs. The car can be in your driveway, on the street (where legal), at a shop, or in a lot. Running or not, with body damage or broken glass, the tow is still completely free to you.
4. Prepare a simple handoff – no repairs, no spending
You do not need to fix dents, replace glass, or address rust. Just remove personal items, have your keys if possible, and locate the title if you have it. Our towing partner will guide you through signing the title or other necessary paperwork at pickup, so the vehicle can be sold to benefit Heritage for the Blind.
5. We sell the car as-is and handle all logistics
After pickup, the vehicle is transported and sold in its current condition. Cosmetic and structural body damage is already factored into the sale process. You don’t deal with buyers, advertising, or negotiations. Proceeds from the sale support Heritage for the Blind’s work for people who are blind or visually impaired, turning your problem vehicle into practical help.
6. Receive your tax receipt and finish your donation
Once the car sells, we mail you a tax receipt that reflects the actual sale price. If the sale is under $500, your receipt shows the guaranteed $500 deduction. For sales above $500, we also provide IRS Form 1098-C as needed. You’re done — the damaged car is gone, pickup was free, and you have documentation for your federal income tax return.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged title for your Rhode Island vehicle
Tip: A missing title doesn’t always stop a donation, but it can slow things down. Let us know upfront if the title is lost, in another name, or water-damaged from flooding. We’ll explain Rhode Island’s options and what additional paperwork or ID might be needed so your damaged car can still be accepted and properly transferred.
Tight or unsafe parking spots in Providence neighborhoods
Tip: Narrow streets in neighborhoods like Federal Hill or College Hill can make towing tricky, especially if the vehicle has severe body damage or won’t roll. Tell us exactly where the car sits (garage, backyard, street, lot) and whether it moves. We’ll schedule the right tow truck and may ask you to be present to help coordinate access or keys.
Existing storage, impound, or repair shop fees
Tip: If your damaged car is at a body shop, storage yard, or impound, there may be unpaid fees. Towing is still free, but those fees are between you and the facility. Share any deadlines or charges when you schedule pickup so we can coordinate timing and paperwork to get the vehicle released as smoothly and quickly as possible.
Unclear level of damage after an accident or storm
Tip: You don’t need a mechanic’s report, but a basic description helps: has the frame bent, are windows gone, is there flood or saltwater exposure? Honest details about the damage help us set realistic expectations on sale value and your potential deduction, and ensure we send appropriate equipment for a safe and successful tow.
